Christmas again

Here's Bronwyn, last Christmas, arranging the first set of Pania Press books for signing by Therese and myself in the flat in Grant Rd, Thorndon.

A year later, in Auckland, we've just put out another gift edition, this time of my Sappho versions, entitled Papyri: Love poems & fragments from Sappho & elsewhere. This time it's to celebrate our marriage, in the registry office in Albert Street, on the 23rd of November (a very happy event!).

If you're curious to sample the texts of the poems, you can check them out here. If you'd like to purchase another version of the book, Michael Steven's Soapbox Press edition is still on sale, and can be ordered from here.

Here's a sample of one of Bronwyn's exquisite hand-drawn covers:

So Merry Christmas to all Pania's friends and supporters over the last year. Watch this space for many more exciting publications and developments in 2008!

The Eternals (Graham Fletcher)

Pania Press's third publication (and first Art Catalogue) is now out - and available for purchase through this website.

The price is $75 (postage is included within New Zealand).

For this you'll receive an A4-sized, 20-page catalogue, with a cover designed and screen-printed by Graham Fletcher, in a protective handmade envelope/slipcase.

The book contains Bronwyn Lloyd's original essay, "Tar-Babies and Taboos," and a chronology of Graham's work to date.

EVERY COPY ALSO INCLUDES A UNIQUE, ORIGINAL DRAWING BY THE ARTIST !

That's the reason why this edition has had to be limited to 45 copies - signed and numbered by the artist. Each drawing is based on a particular sculpture on display at Graham's show "The Eternals," at the Anna Bibby Gallery (Newmarket, Auckland) from 2-26 October 2007.

Here's a sample of one of the drawings:

You can see another sample here.

You can order a copy either by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, or by writing directly to Pania Press at:

2/5 Hastings Road
Mairangi Bay
North Shore City 0630
Auckland

Cheques should be made payable to Pania Press.

We can also arrange direct bank account transfers on request.

A sample poem is included in the entry above .

many things happened

Pania Press's second publication is Thérèse Lloyd's debut collection of poems, many things happened, available in a signed, limited edition of thirty copies.

Thérèse will be off to America in mid-2007, having been awarded a year-long fellowship to study at Iowa university's International Writing Programme, as a result of her year doing a Masters in Creative Writing at Bill Manhire's International Institute of Modern Letters.

Congratulations, Thérèse! It's great to be able to offer our readers this opportunity to purchase a selection of her work before she leaves New Zealand for who knows how long ...

Each book is unique, the covers having been individually sewn by Bronwyn Lloyd (as in the earlier gift edition of thirteen copies -- now, alas, exhausted).

The books cost $45 each, and can be ordered either by leaving address details (which can be done completely confidentially) in the comments section of this blog, or by writing to the Pania Press at 43b Grant Rd, Thorndon, Wellington. Full postage will be charged for overseas addresses.

Here's the table of contents for the ten poems included in the chapbook:

The Word Tin
King Canute
Forecast
The Family Man
Fallot’s Tetralogy
Feeding the Rats
Above the Auto-dismantler Shop
many things happened
Gorecki’s Third
For Hira

We've also included this sample of Thérèse's work for you:

Forecast

They must have swum out early,
at least three hundred of them
surging back and forth.

People like moles
emerged from inside their homes
clustering under door frames and balconies
to watch them.

We put a crate on the deck
and each took turns at standing on it
making little gasping noises
when one jumped or turned.

Eventually, guiltily, we grew tired of them
and retreated back inside to the warmth.

It was late afternoon
before they crossed my mind again.

I went to the window
and in the far distance
the dolphins were still there
moving back and forwards,
not really going anywhere.
